Sterling Silver Mood Rings History

It is frequently said that Joshua Reynolds developed the first ring in 1975, but the ring was actually developed in the 1960s by a man named Marving Wernick. It is said that Wernick saw a strip of thermotropic material being used to take a person's temperature and realized that the same material could be used to create a unique piece of jewelry. He proceeded to create a ring by covering the thermotropic material with glass and placing it in a silver setting. The ring became popular and reproductions soon flooded the market. While Reynolds did not invent the mood ring, he contributed to the history of mood rings by selling millions of them.

How Do They Work?

So how exactly does the ring know how a person is feeling? Well, it doesn't. What the ring does is measure a person's temperature, which in turn reflects the emotions that the individual is feeling. For example, when a person is feeling anxious her skin cools and the ring will turn black. The mood ring uses thermotropic liquid crystals inside a glass dome or a strip of liquid crystals beneath a glass dome to measure the temperature. The metal ring conducts the skin temperature to the liquid crystals, which causes the molecules to move into a new position, depending on the temperature. That new position affects how the crystals absorb and reflect light, which we see as a change in the color of the ring.

Mood Ring Colors

As mentioned before, sterling silver mood rings change color to reflect changes in a person's body temperature. Each color is associated with a particular mood, as shown in the following list:

  • Black - A black mood ring says that the person wearing it is feeling a great deal of tension, pressure and stress.
  • Gray - The color gray says that the person wearing the ring is very nervous and anxious.
  • Amber - The person with an amber mood ring is feeling somewhat anxious.
  • Green - A green ring says that the person is in an average mood, not really happy and calm, but not nervous and stressed either.
  • Teal - A color partway between blue and green indicates a person who is fairly calm.
  • Blue - A blue mood ring means the person wearing it is peaceful and calm.
  • Dark Blue - When the ring is dark blue, the wearer is happy or in an amorous, romantic mood.

Keep in mind that the ring can be affected by outside influences. For example, on a hot, muggy day the mood ring is far more likely to show blue than black.

Caring for Silver Jewelry

Because these rings are made from sterling silver, they are subject to tarnish. You can help keep tarnish away by holding and wearing the ring frequently, since body oils can remove light tarnish and prevent new tarnish from forming. Also, store the ring in an airtight spot, such as a ziplock bag, when you are not wearing it. Clean it regularly with water mixed with a mild detergent and a clean cotton cloth. Do not use paper towels, which are too rough and can actually scratch the silver. To remove stubborn tarnish, a silver polishing liquid or cream can be applied to the ring with a soft cotton cloth.
