Pink Gemstone Rings
From LoveToKnow Jewelry
There are a wide variety of pink gemstone rings. Shades of pink can range from a very subtle pale blush of pink to bold and vibrant mauve and everything in between, even a salmon color or vibrant fuchsia.
Types of Pink Gems
Many pink gemstone rings are made from tourmaline, pink sapphire, pink topaz or kunzite. The cost of the ring will depend upon the cost of the gemstone. Other factors must be considered when designing the ring, such as the fragility of each particular jewel and if the setting needs to protect the piece from chips and wear and tear. Some jewels are sensitive to light and heat or being bumped into other objects. Pink sapphire is extremely popular right now as well as pink topaz, which is quite reasonably priced.
The range of shades and clarity varies from gem to gem, but the most common pink gemstone rings are made from:
- Morganite or beryl
- Kunzite
- Pink diamond
- Pink sapphire
- Garnet
- Rhodochrosite
- Rhodonite
- Tourmaline
- Cobalto calcite
- Rose quartz
- Topaz
- Dolamite
- Mabe pearl
- Spinel
- Kunzite
Tourmaline
Pink tourmaline can vary in color between almost deep red to a very soft pink. Egyptian legend believed that tourmaline came in a wide variety of colors because during its ascent from the center of the earth it passed over a rainbow and took on all the colors of the rainbow. Today, tourmaline is often called the "gemstone of the rainbow" for this reason. Some tourmalines change color slightly depending upon whether they are in natural or artificial light. Every tourmaline gemstone is unique. Tourmaline has a hardness of 7.5 on the Moh's scale and is found in Africa, Madagascar, Brazil, United States of America, Mexico, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

Kunzite
Kunzite is a pink gemstone that was first found in California in 1902 by George F. Kunz. Although the stone was discovered in the United States, kunzite is also found in Madagascar, Pakistan, and Brazil. These stones can be as large as 8 carats and come in colors from pale pink to a deep rich pink. The lighter colors are more reasonably priced. Although it is not common, radiation is sometimes used to deepen the pink color of Kunzite gemstones. The large size of the gemstone makes it ideal for large cocktail rings.
Kunzite gems are fragile and their color fades when exposed to bright light or to heat. Although the hardness is a 6 or 7, they will break easily if struck with force. You can learn more about kunzite by reading Kunz's book Articles and Notes on Kunzite.
Birthstone Ring
Those born in October enjoy the opal as a birthstone. Because opals are somewhat fragile many with October birthdays choose to wear tourmaline, which is a deep pink jewel, or another pink stone instead.
Pink Gemstone Rings on a Budget
If you can't afford the pricier versions of the pink gemstones, there are many alternatives from cubic zirconia to less pricey topaz rings. Zulu Moon, maker of fine sterling silver jewelry, offers many looks similar to what you'll find in fine jewelry stores, such as a pink crystal heart ring and a simple but elegant October eternity ring.
