History of Mood Rings

In the late 1960's, jewelry designer Marvin Wernick invented the first mood ring. Wernick got the idea for the ring when he witnessed a doctor take a child's temperature by placing a strip of thermotropic material on a child's forehead. The material changed colors with the child's temperature. Inspired, Wernick designed rings with the thermotropic material and named them mood rings. The ring design involved placing thermotropic liquid crystals in clear glass domes and setting the domes in silver and gold rings.

Unfortunately, Wernick did not patent his ring design. Joshua Reynolds created the famous line of mood rings that was so popular in the 1970's. Reynolds sold millions of rings and made them a trendy accessory.

How Mood Rings Work

Mood rings do not really interpret a person's mood. They measure body temperature. Each mood ring contains thermotropic liquid crystals inside a glass dome that measures body temperature changes. The colors change as the body temperature changes. Many mood ring manufacturers claim that the body temperature change reflects a person's mood.

Why Children Love Mood Rings

Children love moods rings because it is like having multiple rings in one piece of jewelry because of the constant color change. They enjoy seeing what the ring's color may reveal about a mood. The seller at Legend Gift Shop says that his children shared mood rings with their Mom. The children liked the rings because they acted like an "early warning detection system" of their Mom's mood.

Mood rings can encourage imaginative play because it can be easily incorporated in a game or story. The magical ring makes a great wizard's ring or a buried treasure. Certainly a princess wears a rainbow-like ring.
